How does a self-inflating mat work?
The inside of the mat consists of so-called polyurethane foam, which compresses the air when rolled up. When the valve is opened, the foam is filled with oxygen and expands the inside of the mat. If necessary, some air can be supplied through the mouth until the maximum thickness of the mat is reached.
What does the R-value mean?
The so-called R-value is a benchmark for the thermal resistance of a material. It therefore indicates how well or poorly a material conducts heat. The higher the R-value, the higher the insulation performance and vice versa. The statement “the thicker the mattress, the higher the R-value” is a false conclusion. Here it is not only the thickness of the mat that matters, but also the nature of the material, the filling and other factors such as the surface and the structure of the air chambers.
